Dream come true: Crystal set to play for Yankees Thursday
Dream come true: Crystal set to play for Yankees Thursday
TAMPA — Billy Crystal will get to “look mahvelous” in pinstripes. The actor will sign a one-day, minor league contract with the New York Yankees and play in Thursday’s exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Crystal, an avid Yankees fan, will work out with the team on Wednesday and will wear uniform No. 60 for the game — to be played one day before his 60th birthday. The Yankees said Monday they have the approval of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.
“I’ve been waiting 50 years for this call,” Crystal said in a statement released by the team. “I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of the Yankees and commissioner Selig. I know this’ll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I’m looking forward to helping the younger players, which by the way is all of them. Oops, I have to go, Scott Boras is on the phone.”
Crystal, according to the Yankees hit .348 and was captain during his senior year at Long Beach High School in New York. He directed and produced “61*,” a move about Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle and the 1961 Yankees.
“The Yankees are excited to welcome the newest member of our team known for his humor and wit as well as his undying love for the Yankees,” chief operating officer Lonn Trost said.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi, after Monday night’s 4-0 win over Cincinnati, said he hasn’t determined what position Crystal will play.
“That remains to be seen,” Girardi said. “Obviously, it’s kind of exciting. Billy Crystal has done a lot for this organization. He’s always been a big part of it. Our way of rewarding him, saying thanks for everything that you’ve done.”
Country singer Garth Brooks has played in spring training games, helping raise money for his Touch ‘em All Foundation. He was 1-for-22 (.045) in 1999 with the San Diego Padres, 0-for-17 the following year with the New York Mets and 1-for-8 (.125) in 2004 with the Kansas City Royals.
I’ve got to admire a guy who loves baseball this much….and he’s hilarious to boot.
Angels’ Season Over
Well, the Red Sox completed their sweep of the Angels in the ALDS last night. The Angels aren’t making excuses, but the injuries piled up on them at the last of the season. They had a good season, however, and should be right back there again next year. I want to say a personal ‘Good Job’ to my friend Reggie Willits. We are so proud of you!
So now I’m rooting for the Indians and Rockies. I’m ready for some new blood in the World Series. I guess, really though, it’s been fairly new blood the past few years…
Angels Clinch Division
The Angels have won the AL West division title. They need to keep winning though to get home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Congrats to the whole team. It’s been a definite team effort. And congrats to our favorite Angel around here, Reggie Willits. Here’s a recent article on Reggie.
2007 Home Run Derby
Congratulations to Vladimir Guerrero of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on being the 2007 Home Run Derby winner. It was a really good contest this year. The All-Star game is tonight at 7 p.m. CT on FOX.
Courage
Yesterday, Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day. It got me to thinking about all of the men and women who are “pioneers”. Those courageous and strong enough to take on so much for the sake of those that follow. Those people that break the race, gender, etc. lines; those that speak out about things no one wants to talk about. To those people I say “Thank You”. Yes, there are still many problems in our nation, in the world. But because of these people, knowledge is spread. One person that might have otherwise been ignorant is now passing down a new way of thinking to their children. Change doesn’t happen overnight. It seems like the smallest change takes forever sometimes, but we can’t give up hope and we can never stop working towards the day that everyone will be treated equally and with the respect they deserve.
Baseball!
Baseball season is here. The first full day of MLB. My friend Reggie Willits made the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim team. He’s a backup outfielder. GO REGGIE!! I have two fantasy baseball teams this year. One on Yahoo and one on MLB.com. So far I’m seriously under-impressed with MLB.com’s.
There are still three more ewes that have to have their lambs within the next few days…or we have a problem. We have 21 live lambs. They all seem to be doing good. The bottle baby is starting to put on a little weight. She’s cute as a button (I’ve always wondered why people say that. Buttons aren’t all that cute.).
It’s time for Little League summer softball. I’m head coach this year. My brother’s going to assistant coach. My mom is taking care of all the paper and leg work. I’ll be glad when we get that part over with and can concentrate on softball. The focus is going to be on learning the fundamentals. I figure, if we get those down, winning will come on it’s own.
